eligible schools

Our vision is a community of individuals who are literate, self-supporting and valued for their unique contributions to society.

We believe one of the ways to accomplish this is by addressing core issues related to the academic performance of students living in poverty. In order to empower children to overcome many of the obstacles they encounter during the school day, we provide school supplies, books, hygiene items and other aid for students across metro Detroit.

In 2011, Operation: Kid Equip distributed more than $3.4 million in donated supplies across Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties.

We do most of our outreach through a distribution center called the Teachers’ Annex. The center allows teachers from higher-poverty schools to freely choose school day supplies on behalf of their students who need them. Teachers are allowed to visit the Teachers’ Annex once per month. Last year, the average teacher left with $491 per visit to the Teachers’ Annex.

Eligibility to participate in the Operation: Kid Equip program is open to public school teachers and teachers from nonprofit charter schools in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne Counties. In order to participate, a school building must have 70% or more of the students eligible for the free or reduced-price lunch program. Meeting these criteria does not provide automatic enrollment in the program, and is also not a guarantee of enrollment in the program. At this time, Operation: Kid Equip’s capacity is 150 active schools.

An active school is defined as a school where there have been 15 visits to the Teachers’ Annex over a three month period, unless otherwise approved during the enrollment process. The look-back periods are August-October, November-January, February-April, and May-July.

Beginning June 30, 2012, enrolled schools must re-enroll each year. The Operation: Kid Equip school year begins on August 1 of each year.

In order to be enrolled or re-enrolled in the program, the first step is for the building principal to submit a help desk ticket requesting to start the process.

The overall enrollment process includes, but is not limited to, a poverty assessment, staff roster review, a review of the school’s previous visit history (if applicable), the appointment of a building liaison, and orientation at the Teachers’ Annex. It’s important to note that Operation: Kid Equip relies strictly on information obtained through the Michigan Department of Education for all poverty assessments.

Once the enrollment process is complete, the school will be added to our system and eligible teachers within the building will be able to register.

All registrations, appointment scheduling, appointment cancellations, and account maintenance are done online and are self-serve. Operation: Kid Equip volunteers do not register or handle appointments by  telephone or e-mail.

It will also be helpful to review the Operation: Kid Equip FAQ for questions surrounding the program, policies and procedures.
