book grant information
Procedures
To receive books, this book grant application must be completed and submitted online.
If you are a nonprofit, please be prepared to upload a clear copy of your most current IRS Letter of Determination. You will not be able to submit your application package until the letter is uploaded.
These books are meant for qualifying individuals who are served by programs such as Schools, Head Start, Title I, Special Education, At Risk, Adult and Alternative Education Programs, Migrant and Bilingual Children and other similar types of programs. In addition materials are also distributed to nonprofit Nursing Homes, and agencies that care for the ill and underprivileged such as Domestic Abuse Shelters, Community Health Centers and other appropriate agencies. If you have questions about your eligibility, please contact us for further clarification.
These Materials are not intended for the general population, but rather for those individuals in need based upon specific criteria. Applications including non-qualifying individuals on their request form will be rejected.
Criteria for Distribution of Books
Books may be distributed to children or adults who meet one of more of the following conditions:
- Receive state or federal public assistance
- Have verifiable annual household income at or below the current federal poverty guidelines
- Receive free or reduced-price lunch
- Are on unemployment
- Are homeless, as defined by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act
- Are in a public or charter school with 70% or more the population on free or reduced-price lunch. (Please note that public or charter schools with less than 70% eligibility may request books in equal number to the students who are eligible for the lunch program.)
Process and Information
Books are selected by Michigan Friends of Education-Operation: Kid Equip staff, based upon the information received in your Book Grant Application and the inventory available. Once an order is packed, the organization will be contacted to schedule a pickup or to coordinate UPS delivery.
Conditions and Stipulations
Michigan Friends of Education-Operation: Kid Equip is committed to serving the people in the State of Michigan by promoting literacy with the distribution of free books to those in need. Books and materials received by school and organizations may not be sold, bartered, used in fundraisers, or exchanged. Books cannot be exchanged or shared with other organizations and must be redistributed by your organization directly to those in need. Books may not be given to volunteers, officers or staff for personal use.
Michigan Friends of Education-Operation: Kid Equip does not take responsibility for the content of the donated books. Depending on your purview and outreach, some of the books may contain language you may consider inappropriate; such as language describing graphic violence, sexual activity or use of foul language. Although we do our best to match the material with the population we serve, we strongly suggest you review the books prior to distribution. If you find books you do not wish to distribute, and cannot find individuals who could use them, they may be discarded.
